Growing & Thriving

Updated: Jul 30, 2024

Our Loomis Goose Creek Preserve Osprey triplets are now 5 to 6 weeks old and thriving, despite days of extreme heat and heavy downpours. During these severe temps and rains, they often can be seen huddled under (mom) Femke's wings for protection from the elements. The youngest was recognizable for a time by its fluffier gray coat and white back-stripe, but it has now caught up with its older siblings and shows a similar coat of feathers with white tips. They are mostly eating, sleeping, and practicing their wing muscles, and they are still mostly staying close together. In the coming weeks until fledging, expected in early August, it is very likely that we will be able to see them from below the nest, popping their heads up over the edge, curiously looking out at their surroundings, making it a good time to stop over to the preserve for an in person look. (The nest is visible from the parking lot.) The preserve is located at 2484 West Lake Road in Ashville, next to Ashville Bay Marina and very near Fardink Road.
