Join us for a Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) survey on Saturday, February 15th at 11:00 AM at our Cassadaga Lakes Nature Park located at 8131 NY-60 in Cassadaga. No experience needed! We will provide on-site training for anyone who hasn't participated in a survey before.
HWA is an invasive aphid-like insect that is threatening the health of the eastern hemlock across the eastern United States, including in Chautauqua County. The most important thing we can do to save our hemlocks is to find HWA early. If we know where the infestations are, we can take protective action.
The best time to search for HWA is in winter months because, while they are overwintering, they are immobilized in small, cotton ball-like capsules at the base of each hemlock needle, making them easy to detect. The bugs are also inactive during the winter, so well-meaning surveyors won’t inadvertently spread these pests…
