Volunteer Opportunities

If you want to know you’re making a difference for clean, healthy water and habitats, you’ve come to the right place! Volunteering with the Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy gets you directly involved in the conservation of our watershed. We have volunteer positions for all kinds of interests and personalities!

These are some of the areas in which we need your help:

Preserve Stewards
If you love being outdoors, hiking through forests or swamps, then you will love being a CWC Preserve Steward! Preserve Stewards assist us in monitoring and manage our conservation lands on an annual basis. At a minimum, this entails walking the boundaries of the preserve and completing a monitoring report. Many of our stewards also volunteer to help with cleaning up litter or garbage, identifying and removing invasive plants, coordinating and leading nature walks, as well as helping on any larger projects that may come up. The following preserves are still in need of stewards and could use your help!

Little-Big Inlet Wetland Preserve near Mayville, NY,
Goose Creek Valley Greenway Preserve near Ashville, NY,
David and Margaret Naetzker Preserve near Ashville, NY,
Wells Bay Lakeshore Forest in the Town of North Harmony,
Fletcher Family Preserve on Sunset Drive in the Town of Busti,

Watershed Stewards
Our Watershed Stewards take action on their own properties by adopting watershed-friendly landscaping and gardening practices. CWC recognizes these efforts with a certificate and sign that can be proudly displayed on your property. Click here for more information and an application!

Invasive Species Action Team
Several harmful invasives are creeping their way into our area - or worse, they’re already here! We need volunteers to help monitor our preserves for the occurrence of new species such as the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid and the Emerald Ash Borer, and to help control invasive plants. No prior experience or invasive knowledge is necessary. We can teach you everything you need to know!

House Party Hosts
Want to help spread the word about what can be done to help the lakes and other waterways in Chautauqua County?  Host a CWC get-together at your home or cottage for your friends and neighbors! You will learn what you as an individual can do to reduce runoff, nutrients and topsoil reaching the lake, as well as what your neighborhood or association can do to collectively reduce storm water runoff and control the factors fueling lake algae and plant growth.

Operations Team
Operations Team Members are the unsung heroes of the CWC! They work behind the scenes in our office to help us keep things running smoothly. There are tasks available to fit even busy schedules.

Outreach Team
If you’re a "people person" and want to spread the word about conserving and protecting our waters, the Outreach Team is for you! Outreach Team Members act as CWC ambassadors at local fairs and other events by setting up a display table and talking to the public about the CWC’s work and mission.

Social Ambassadors
Social media for a small non-profit is complicated. Did you know that unless we pay to “boost” a post, you probably won’t see it in your Facebook feed, even if you’ve liked our page? However, the more folks interact with our posts, the more Facebook shows them to other people. With a simple like, share, retweet, favorite, or repin, you can help us get our message out there. This is a great way to help from anywhere at any time! If you’re willing to help in this area on a regular basis, let us know!
